Update! Outdoor Vision Fest 2012

Category: Animation, Architecture, Design, Film / Multimedia, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive, Landscape design, Music, Performing Arts, Photography

Outdoor Vision Fest is an annual exhibition held by our friends at Santa Fe University of Arts and Design – and this year, Frontier was lucky enough to be apart of the show. We were really excited that 20 finalists from our Loop competition we’re able to be exhibited along side local students and artists in Santa Fe. We love the video above, a response to the architecture of Ricardo Legorretta, and we love all the digital, but, we have to say that we were completely taken by Lucy Madeline’s ‘Bridge’. This work is a stunner. Simple, clean but incredibly strong.

Look out for more images from OVF 2012…. and work form the other big event Frontier is supporting, Artfest12. More goodness coming your way soon.

Architecture and Urban Poetry

Category: Architecture, Landscape design

There are some nice themes going on here. Capsule ArchitectureLAB recently took out top prize at the MCM Group Mock Firms competition… pretty impressive stuff. All the members of Capsule are under grads from New School of Architecture and Design and based their development on the Hutong’s of China. Hutongs are a type of narrow streets most commonly found in Beijing, China. In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan, traditional courtyard residences. These hutongs become connectors joining neighborhoods together, linking people and communities. Hutongs however are currently in decline as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings.

Capsule ArchitectureLAB proposes a social infrastructure with ‘Hutong poetry’, one where a community is connected within one space, and where the ideals of the hutong are expressed through the structure of the building. Much like The Bosco Verticale, parklands will be introduced up the skyscraper, creating a space for interaction and social activity.

Anyway, watch the video, it’s good and gives insight into the ‘feel’ of this project, it’s there that it seems to succeed the most.

Top 5 Cool Treehouses

Category: Architecture, Blog, Design

I know, I know…Treehouses right? Sometimes I wonder what the fascination is with Treehouses…. It seems like we all like to look at pictures of them, but how many of us live in them or have one of them in our backyards? Funny thing is, New Zealand is actually a big fan of them! This is something I didn’t know before I started writing this post, we have a number of them down here as hotels, restaurants and actually my old 8 year old neighbour Ben had a sick treehouse in his yard too…

So, in honour of childhood nostalgia and wishful thinking here’s my Top 5 of the hottest designed Treehouses from around the world! My favourite? The invisible one of course!

From top:

1) BAUMRAUM TREEHOUSES | Inhabitat – Sustainable Design Innovation, Eco Architecture, Green Building

2) The Yellow Treehouse - commissioned as part of a marketing campaign by Yellow in 2008 the Yellow Treehouse is located 45 mins from Media Design School in Auckland.

3) The Okinawa Treehouse Restaurant - Okay, so it’s not actually a tree, it’s concrete and the website is all in Japanese but it stays on the list because it’s awesome!

4) Hapuku Lodge Luxury Treehouses - 10 metres above the ground in a canopy of native Manuka these Treehouses really are Luxurious…

5) The Mirrorcube Tree Hotel - Designed by Swedish architects Tham and Videgard Hansson hides among the trees in Sweden.

Art and Theatre

Category: Fine Arts, Theatre Design

Here’s something really nice. Sarah Crowner’s recent show on at the Nordenhake gallery in Berlin uses theatre and staging references as her starting point for her work. Fabric paint, curtains, sewn canvas and marquette like sculptures make up an installation of work rather than just an exhibition. This show is definitely one to move through, the sculptures in particular change and develop from different vantage points, and the huge curtain canvas ‘Kurtyna Teatru (after Maria Jarema)’, creates a bold backdrop for the show.

When reading about the work, I really liked the idea that the paintings and sculptures could be seen as ‘proposals’ for something else, and how the varying viewpoints create movement and interaction with the work, essentially transforming the viewer into performer.

All nice ideas, and a really strong palette. I like.
