Tom Darracott for Mercedes

I think that it's always good to have a role model. This guy is mine. I want to be him and to be as good as him. I really like the way Tom marries a design, fashion and fine art aesthetic together. He's an experimenter as well which is why I think his work is so interesting, and for me, captivating. It's glossy and it attracts and repels at the same time, which I always think is a good thing. What's best is that usually this approach is saved for the art world, but Tom uses it anywhere.

A few months back, Tom art directed this work for Mercedes. It's a short and sweet commercial but it's pretty nice. I'm often astounded when watching TV that certain ads make the cutÂ…. car commercials are often the ones that make me question creatives at ad agencies. Audi often nail it and here, I reckon that Tom has too. The beginning is fantastic. I'd give or take the lightning, but the static, the shine and then the 80's palette that's revealed is modern, clean and current.

My absolute favourite work of Tom's is a self initiated series that investigates disintegrating flags. This is just so beautiful and should be in a gallery, or on my wall. I couldn't write about him without showing you this. So watch the car get shiny and then watch some flags fall apart. Different projects, but somehow the darkness is evident in both.
