I saw a collaged teaser of this film a while ago and was really interested in what it was all going to be. Now it’s released and it doesn’t disappoint.
Maelstrom, directed by Tom Geraedts, follows a young woman in London who slips ‘through the cracks of consciousness’ and into a world of beautiful collage. A maelstrom is a very powerful whirlpool, a vortex of water with a considerable downwards pull. The word, made famous by Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘A decent into the Maelstrom’, literally means a grinding current, one that this character is both trapped and liberated by. Snakes, dripping plants, rivers made of silver…. it’s a beautiful piece. It’s not overly dramatic and it comes and goes quicker than you think, but there’s some beautiful moments in there which are definitely worth spending the time looking at. For me, the collaged film aesthetic is what I really like. I like that this world of the unconscious has been created literally out of snippets of reality and the imagined.
A nice work all round.
