A while ago we did a post on Julia Pott’s brilliant surreal animation. It got a lot of a attention and rightly so because it’s awesome…. but here’s someone else who I reckon hit’s the spot in a very similar way.
Hiraoka Masanobu is a director, animator and illustrator living and working in Tokyo. As a freelance animator he’s worked on numerous music videos and advertising campaigns, including producing illustrations for UNIQLO. His personal projects however are where it’s at. Not only are the illustrations beautiful with a colour palette that looks like melted ice cream, but he also manages to capture an introspective and emotionally rich feel in his lyrical tales. The movement of his animation style is also soft. People, places, shapes and colour, ooze into one another in a really lovely way. Interestingly, his most recent work for SINCHO.TV has a similar vibe which is rare for an advertising campaign, but even in this, you can’t help but become entwined in the work as it slowly morphs and unfolds before you.
Like Julia’s animation…. give this stuff some time. It’s not work you rush or take a quick gawk at in-between emails. Sit and get caught up in the colour and the movement. It’s beautiful stuff.
