Jeppe Hein is an Danish/ Dutch artist working and living out of Berlin and Copenhagen and is famous for straddling the line between art, architecture and experiential work. I’ve been a bit of a fan of his work after seeing one of his mirror boxes a few years ago, I like how his work challenges the viewer and the environment that they are in. Sometimes, yes…. they can be a bit like a ‘playground’, but maybe thats not such a bad thing?
This series of work produced for Beaufort04, the fourth Triennial of Contemporary Art by the sea, allowed Heppe to produce a series of his signature ‘Modified Social Benches’. Each bench subverts the user in some way, turning something practical into something unusable, or creating a new interaction in what otherwise would be an ordinary task. Although not my favourite of his work, it would be fun to be strolling around the coast of Belgium and see what positions you end up while taking a pit stop.
If you’re near Belgium, Beaufort runs until the end of September and would well be worth the trip.
