This time of year is so good for design. Salone del Mobile last week, and now it's time for the incomparable Hyeres. Hyeres is a fashion and photography festival held in Hyeres, France. This is the 29th year the event has been happening and it attracts all the new, fresh faces of fashion design and photography. Open to anyone to enter, the calibre set by previous years is incredibly high, always avant garde, and usually incredibly on trend, even if that trend hasn't really taken mainstream shape yet. It's so good that I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's one of the most exciting creative events of the calendar. Phew, a big statement!

With 312 entries from 55 nationalities, 45 were chosen by a jury headed by Opening Ceremony founders and Kenzo creative directors, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. As the worlds' current fashion favourites, they seemed an obvious choice to select for such a boundary-pushing competition. The ten fashion designers shown above are the selected finalists and, apart from Kenta Matsushige, all hail from European countries.

My pick? Shoot… it's so very hard to say. I particularly like Louis-Gabriel Nouchi (top), whose patch-worked voluminous clothes feel old and new all at the same time. The image above doesn't do the collection justice at all (click here to see more) as it's by far the simplest of the range. My other pick would be Belgium's Pablo Henrard (eighth shot), which surprised me as again, the featured image didn't do a huge amount for me. But looking through the full collection I was really impressed with the delicate construction, future feeling fabrication, and surprisingly wearable collection.

It's an exciting time for fashion, look back tomorrow with eager eyes for the photography highlight (there's so much goodness there!), and again in a few days for the winners of this outstanding creative event.
