Rich and detailed: The illustration of Michal Sawtyruk

There has been some incredible illustration emerging over the last few years, with some of the world’s top brands partnering with artists to produce one-of-a-kind pieces and signature products. Gucci have been ramping this up with their varying partnerships, most notably with surrealist Ignasi Monreal.

Michal Sawtyruk is another such artist. Working as a freelance artist in Poland, he has been involved with the likes of BMW, Quartz and Dreamworks to name a few. His style is rich and detailed and shifts just slightly from realistic proportions and representation. What’s really striking with his work is his use of light. Lighting is one of the most important things with photography, however until really studying Sawtyruk’s work, I hadn’t realised how important it can also be in illustration.

Under the Surface, is a very short animation by Sawtyruk that realises his stunning illustration in motion. It’s simple narrative is matched with a perfectly executed, but minimal soundscape.
